The "Old Way" of Car Care is Failing Your Luxury Vehicle
I know what you’re probably thinking: "It’s a 2023 model, surely the paint can't be that bad?" The reality is that even nearly new luxury vehicles like this Mercedes E400d in Obsidian Black often fall victim to the "old way" of maintenance specifically, the dreaded automated car wash. While convenient, these machines are essentially "slap and dash" operations that inflict heavy swirl marks and deep scratches into your cars paint.
At our detailing studio in Bromborough - Car Detailing On The Wirral, we believe a vehicle of this class deserves more than just a wash, it deserves a transformation. Over the course of four days, we documented our journey of stripping away years of damage (compressed into months of poor washing) to reveal a finish that Mercedes themselves told the client was "unfixable" without a respray.
Day 1: The Foundation of Decontamination
Before we can even think about a polishing machine, we have to ensure the surface is surgically clean. If you polish a car that hasn't been properly decontaminated, you're just grinding dirt into the paint.
The Wheels Off Approach
We started by removing the wheels entirely. This allows us to deep clean the arches and the inner barrels of the alloys, areas that a standard wash never touches. Once cleaned, we applied Gtechniq Wheel Armor to the faces and barrels, ensuring a two year shield against corrosive brake dust.
Chemical and Physical Cleaning
Next, we moved to the exterior:
Engine Bay Detail:Â A thorough detail of the heart of the E400d.
Chemical Decontamination:Â Using specialized fallout removers to melt away iron filings and tar spots.
Clay Bar Treatment:Â This removes bonded contaminants that chemicals can't touch, leaving the paint feeling smooth as glass.
Glass Preparation:Â We machine polished the glass and applied Gtechniq Smart Glass, a ceramic coating lasting two years or 20,000 miles.
Day 2: The Heavy Hitters (Multi-Stage Correction)
Obsidian Black is a beautiful colour, but it’s unforgiving. In the sun light, the damage from automated washes was "absolutely awful."
The Heavy Cut Stage
We began with a heavy cut compound. This is the aggressive phase designed to level the clear coat and remove the deep scratches and heavy swirls. While this removes the defects, it leaves the paint looking slightly dull which is where the artistry comes in
Instead of just telling you how to polish, I want to share how IÂ approached this specific Mercedes. Mercedes paint is notoriously hard. To get the results the client wanted, I knew we had to chop away to remove the heavy defects safely. By the end of Day 2, the heavy lifting was done, setting the stage for the final refinement of the paint.
Day 3: Bringing the Gloss & Protecting the Interior
Day 3 is all about the "aha" moment when the paint finally begins to pop.

Refining the Finish
We switched to a finer compound and a softer pad to refine the work from Day 2. This stage removes any "haze" left by the heavy cutting and brings back a mirror like gloss. We even tackled deep scratches on the boot lid that Mercedes claimed required a full respray. By the time we were done, those scratches were gone, saving the client thousands in body shop costs.
Interior Sanitization and Protection
A luxury car should feel like a sanctuary.
Steam Cleaners & Wet Vacs:Â To pull dirt from deep within the upholstery.
Air Guns & Tornado Blowers:Â To clear every speck of dust from the vents and crevices.
Gtechniq Smart Fabric:Â Applied to carpets and mats for liquid repellence.
Gtechniq Leather Guard:Â Applied to the door cards, seats, steering wheel, and dash to prevent abrasion and dye transfer.
Day 4: The Final Shield - Ceramic Coating Application
The final day is the most critical for longevity. We started by using CarPro Eraser to strip any remaining polishing oils, ensuring the surface was surgically clean for bonding.
The 3 Year Ceramic Coating Protection
We applied CarPro C.Quartz Professional. This is a semi permanent ceramic layer that:
Enhances the "Obsidian" depth of the black paint.
Provides a 3 year barrier against the elements.
Makes future maintenance infinitely easier for the client, who uses this car to tow his caravans.
The Transformation: Better Than New
This Mercedes E400d left our studio looking better than the day it was delivered. By choosing a multi stage correction over a quick "mop," we preserved the integrity of the paint while delivering a level of gloss that simply can't be found on a dealership lot.
Is your vehicle showing the scars of the automated car wash? Don't listen to the "it needs a respray" talk until you've consulted a master detailer.
P.S. Obsidian Black is one of the most rewarding colours to detail, but also the easiest to ruin. If you're washing your car at home, always follow the wash guide and instructions we give you when you leave the studio.
