The Ultimate Protection Package for the Iconic 2023 Defender
The Land Rover Defender is an icon, but its tough exterior requires specialised care to maintain its prestige and value. We were recently entrusted with a stunning 2023 Santorini Black Defender for a two day, comprehensive detailing and protection service.
Our mission: remove swirl damage, enhance the deep black gloss, and lock in that perfect finish with a professional grade ceramic coating. This project highlights the crucial difference between a car wash and a true paint correction and protection service.
Foundations of a Successful Protection Project
its quite often vehicles arrive with swirl damage from dealer prep or transport. Our "Big Idea" is that this iconic vehicle deserves a flawless, deep gloss finish protected by a durable, physical bond not just wax. This is essential for maintaining the Defender’s premium image and resisting the elements for years to come.
We use CarPro C.Quartz Professional accredited products and follow a rigorous, methodical process over two days. This structured approach, moving from deep decontamination to precision machine polishing and certified coating application, demonstrates the expertise required for luxury black paintwork.
Day 1 – Decontamination and Wheel Service
The first day is dedicated to prepping the surface. A ceramic coating can only bond perfectly to a surgically clean surface.
Wheels Off Service
Before the main wash, we removed the wheels, which allows us to service the areas that are usually inaccessible:
Deep Cleaning: The wheel faces, barrels, wheel arches, and brake calipers were thoroughly cleaned and decontaminated.
Dedicated Coating: We applied a 2 year ceramic coating specifically designed for wheels onto all four wheels before they were refitted. This coating resists brake dust and makes future cleaning effortless.
Three Stage Exterior Decontamination Wash
The exterior paintwork and the engine bay were subjected to our intense three stage wash:
Initial Wash: The process begins with a pre wash, snow foam, and contact wash to safely remove loose surface dirt and grime.
Chemical Decontamination: We then chemically remove embedded contamination, such as iron fallout and tar spots.
Mechanical Decontamination: A final mechanical clay bar treatment was used to shear off any remaining bonded-on dirt, leaving the surface perfectly smooth.
Start of Machine Polishing
Once inside and fully dry, the preparation culminated with the start of the single stage machine polish. This process was carried out across the panels, focusing on removing light swirl damage and beginning the crucial gloss enhancement phase. This concluded Day 1.
Day 2 – Correction and Ceramic Installation Ceramic Coating
Day 2 focuses on finishing the paint correction and applying the ultimate layer of protection.
Completing the Paint Correction
The Defender is a large and complex vehicle, demanding a slow, patient machine polishing process to ensure uniformity.
Attention to Detail: Due to the car's intricate curves, shapes, and numerous body panels, the machine polishing is a slow, methodical process to ensure the paintwork absolutely glistens and shines without any visible swirls.
Visual Impact: The result of the correction is a deep, wet look gloss that makes the Santorini Black colour truly spectacular.
Panel Wipe and Physical Bonding
Before any coating touches the paint, a crucial step occurs:
Surgically Clean: We perform a full panel wipe to remove any polishing oils or residues left from the correction process. This is the only way to ensure the ceramic coating achieves a physical bond with the surface.
The Final Protection Layer
The final step was the installation of the CarPro C.Quartz Professional three year ceramic coating across the entire exterior. This professional coating ensures a mirror image finish and provides long-term resistance against environmental damage, UV, and salt.
