The Foundation: Why a 23 Year-Old Car Needs Surgical Grade Care
Modern cars roll off the line with advanced paint technology, but the 2002 Lotus Elise is a different beast a lightweight, pure driver's machine whose age demands respect and a specific detailing methodology. When a vehicle of this vintage arrives, it’s not just about applying a coating, it's about a measured, multi stage restoration to preserve its heritage and make it look as close to new as physically possible.
With over two decades of dirt and road grime on this Elise, we knew a standard wash wouldn't cut it. This project wasn't just a detail, it was a comprehensive effort to bring the depth of colour and gloss back to a genuine classic - Ceramic Coating
Phase I: Deep Decontamination and Wheel Restoration
The first step in any detail is creating a surgically clean canvas especially with a ceramic coating job. We broke the process down into two crucial initial steps, the wheels and the paintwork decontamination.
Restoring the Original Wheels
The wheels on this Lotus were the original factory set, meaning they were over 23 years old and showed significant signs of life, including a lot of baked on dirt. The owner explicitly requested they not be refurbished, so our goal was maximum visual improvement without paint or repair.
The restoration sequence was:
Removal: The wheels were taken off the vehicle, which is essential for proper cleaning of the barrels and hubs.
Decontamination: We used chemical decontamination to dissolve iron fallout and tar spots, which is a phase in the decontamination of the wheels.
Mechanical Cleaning: A clay bar was necessary to remove all bonded-on surface contaminants that chemicals couldn't safely remove.
Machine Polishing: We machine-polished the faces of the wheels to bring back gloss and smooth out the finish.
Protection: Finally, a dedicated two-year ceramic coating was applied to the wheels for long-term protection and to make future cleaning a breeze.

The Three Stage Exterior Wash
The exterior paintwork received a meticulous three stage wash to ensure every possible contaminant was removed before the polishing began:
Pre-Wash: Snow foam and pre wash chemicals were used to lift and encapsulate loose dirt.
Contact Wash: A two bucket method contact wash to safely clean the surface.
Chemical Decontamination: A full wash to remove fallout and tar spots.
The final and most critical step for a coating prep was a mechanical clay bar. Think of it as exfoliating the paint's skin it removes any stubborn, bonded on dirt that would otherwise cause two major problems:
Clogging the Polishing Pads: Contaminants would tear up our machine polishing pads.
Ramming Contaminants into the Paint: Attempting to polish over surface dirt would simply ram it deeper into the clear coat, ruining the desired result.

Phase II: The Gloss and Paintwork Protection
With the car perfectly clean, it was time to move on to correction and protection.
Single-Stage Machine Polishing
Given the age and nature of the paintwork, a single stage machine polish was selected. This process was sufficient to:
Remove light scratches and swirls.
Significantly enhance the gloss levels and depth of colour of the paintwork.
During the polishing stage, we also addressed the headlamps, which had minor chemical staining, ensuring they were tidied up for a complete, fresh look.

Surgically Clean Prep for Coating
After the machine polishing was complete, we performed a full panel wipe of the exterior paintwork. This is a non negotiable step that often separates a good detail from a great one. The panel wipe removes any oils or residue left behind from the polishing compounds.
Why is this so critical? Because a ceramic coating needs a surgically clean surface to properly bond. Any remaining residue would prevent the coating from adhering correctly, drastically compromising the durability and longevity of the protection.
The Final Reveal: 3-Year Ceramic Coating
With the preparation complete, the three year ceramic coating was installed onto the paintwork.
The result was stunning. The paintwork, after over two decades, now boasts an incredible shine, gloss, and depth of colour. The final look is so fresh, it's hard to believe this car is over 23 years old.
We also took the opportunity to apply fabric protection to the convertible roof before reinstalling it.
Conclusion: A Timeless Classic, Reborn
The Lotus Elise remains a fantastic car that holds its own on the road, even alongside modern SUVs and EVs. This full detail and ceramic coating has ensured this specific 2002 model not only looks incredible but is protected for years to come.
The combination of dedicated wheel coating, comprehensive paint decontamination, and a high quality ceramic coat means the owner now has a truly exhilarating and protected driving experience waiting for them.
