The Ultimate Shield: Detailing an Audi S6 Avant - 5 Year Duel Layered Ceramic Coating Paintwork Protection

The Audi S6 Avant is a blend of high performance and executive refinement a machine that deserves nothing less than the best protection. At our detailing unit in Bromborough on The Wirral, we recently had the pleasure of taking in a returning clients S6 for our Dual Layer Diamond Ceramic Coating system. This isn't just a simple wash and wax, it's a multi day, intensive process designed to provide up to five years of measurable protection and incredible gloss.
The Foundations: Deep Cleaning and Contaminant Removal
A successful ceramic coating is built on a perfectly clean foundation. We operate with the philosophy that the coating can only perform as well as the surface it bonds to. This demanding approach meant our first day was dedicated to decontamination.
Wheels, Arches, and Brake Calipers
The very first step involved removing the wheels to access the full wheel barrel, arches, and brake calipers. This allows for a thorough, deep clean that is simply impossible with the wheels on.
A "Poor Refurb" Discovery: Unfortunately, we discovered that the wheels had been previously subjected to a poor refurbishment. It appeared a dealership had simply lacquered over existing dirt, making any standard cleaning useless.
The Fix: Since no amount of chemical or mechanical cleaning would resolve this, we immediately sent the wheels off. These 19 inch wheels went for a complete, proper re-diamond cut and strip back refurbish to ensure they would be in factory-new condition when the job was complete.
Exterior Decontamination
We then moved on to the paintwork itself. This included:
Engine Bay Detailing: A full wash and detail of the engine bay.
Chemical & Mechanical Clay Bar Treatment: We used both chemical and mechanical clay bar methods to remove all bonded-on contaminants (like industrial fallout, tree sap, baked on dirt, and tar) from the exterior paint.
This meticulous preparation ensures that when the vehicle is moved inside, its surfaces are entirely free of contaminants. Making the Dakota Grey paintwork perfect for the paint correction and coating stages.
Day Two: The Pursuit of Perfection through Paint Correction
With the surfaces meticulously prepared, Day Two was focused entirely on paint correction. A single-stage machine polish will restore the paint's clarity and enhance its gloss. As well as removing light scratches and swirls.
Enhancing the Paintwork
A single-stage machine polish is incredibly effective at removing light scratches and swirl marks that dull a vehicle’s finish.
Tools of the Trade: We used a combination of 3 inch, 5 inch, and 1 inch polishing pads. This allowed us to reach every edge, curve, and tight panel gap, ensuring every aspect of the paintwork was corrected.
The Outcome: The goal here is a highly enhanced, mirror like finish that is ready to accept the ceramic coating for maximum effect.
Glass Treatment
It’s not just the paint that needs protection. We machine-polished the glass to prepare it for the application of Gtechniq Smart Vision, a glass ceramic coating that offers up to two years or 20,000 miles of durability. This dramatically improves wet-weather visibility and makes cleaning much easier.
Day Three: Interior Rejuvenation and Coating Application
Day Three was dedicated to the car's cabin and the critical application of the ceramic coatings to the exterior.
Interior Deep Clean and Protection
Before the coatings were applied, we turned our attention to the interior.
Deep Cleaning: We used steamers and compressed air to deep clean and sanitize every surface. This ensures we reach down the sides of the seats, into air vents, and every corner and crevice making the interior cockpit better than the day it left the factory.
Fabric and Leather Guard: To protect the freshly cleaned surfaces, we applied Gtechniq Smart Fabric to all fabric areas and Gtechniq Leather Guard to the leather. This creates a protective, easy to clean barrier across the entire interior, not just the seats.

Applying the Diamond Car Pro D.Quartz & C.Quartz Ceramic Coating
With the interior done, we moved back to the paintwork for the main event: the dual-layer ceramic coating.
Panel Wipe: First, the paint was treated with a panel wipe to remove any polishing oils or residue. The surface must be surgically clean to allow the ceramic coating to form a strong, physical bond with the paint.
Layer 1: CarPro D.Quartz: The first layer applied was CarPro D.Quartz. This base coat is engineered to make the paintwork incredibly hard, providing the primary durability and scratch resistance. It was applied in a cross-hatch motion (up/down then left/right) for an even, consistent layer, then carefully levelled off.
Layer 2: CarPro C.Quartz: The second layer, CarPro C.Quartz, was then layered over the top. This top coat provides the final layer of gloss, hydrophobic (water-repelling) properties, and UV resistance, locking in the up to five years of protection and longevity. We ensure this coating is applied to the entire exterior, including badges, grills, and painted plastics.
Day Four: Final Touches and Delivery
The final day saw the return of the newly refurbished wheels from Liverpool, which we collected for immediate coating.
Wheel and Trim Protection
Wheel Ceramic Coating: Gtechniq Wheel Armour a dedicated two-year ceramic coating was applied to the faces and barrels of the freshly refurbished wheels.
Calipers and Exhaust Tips: This protective coating was also extended to the brake calipers and the exhaust tips, ensuring they are protected from heat and road grime.
