What does it take to turn a vehicle that hasn't been professionally cleaned in a decade into a showroom stunner? At EKJ Valeting & Detailing Studio in Bromborough, we just wrapped up a massive 4 day restoration on a 2014 BMW 420i that tested every bit of our expertise.

If you’ve been putting off cleaning your car because you cant not get the results you want, or if your car is starting to look more like a garden than a machine, this "How I" guide pulls back the curtain on our professional restoration process.

The Challenge: A Decade of Neglect

When this Alpine White BMW arrived, it was clear we had our work cut out for us. This vehicle hadn't seen a professional detailer's touch in its entire life, and even basic home washing had been neglected for a "considerable amount of time."

The Pain Points:

  • Nature Taking Over: Every gap, groove, and seal was filled with green moss and slime.

  • Embedded Grime: Dirt was baked into the paintwork, sills and door shuts.

  • Dull Finishes: The engine bay was weathered, and the once bright white paint had lost its shine.

Day 1: The Deep Decontamination

We began with a brutal exterior "strip down" to see what we were actually working with.

The Exterior Revitalisation

We performed a 3 stage wash, but that was just the beginning. To truly restore the surface, we followed up with:

  1. Chemical Decontamination: Removing fallout and stubborn tar spots.

  2. Mechanical Clay Bar: Pulling out the microscopic contaminants that a standard wash simply cannot reach.

  3. The Details: Every gap was cleared of moss, and the engine bay was thoroughly cleaned and detailed.

Wheel and Arch Prep

The wheels were in such a state that they required a full refurbishment. We removed them and sent them off to our specialists in Liverpool. This gave us the perfect opportunity to deep clean the wheel arches and prep the brake calipers for a fresh look.

Day 2: Precision Polishing

With the surfaces surgically clean, Day 2 focused on restoring the Alpine White paint to its original brilliance.

  • Single-Stage Machine Polish: This process was used to remove light scratches and the "swirl" marks caused by years of poor washing.

  • Glass Restoration: We didn't stop at the paint. We machine-polished all the glass and applied a dedicated 2 year ceramic coating to ensure maximum visibility and rain shedding.

Day 3: Interior Sanctuary & The Finishing Touches

Inside the Cabin

Using a combination of steam cleaners and air tornados, we attacked the interior. We used a sanitising cleaner to get into every nook and cranny. To protect the newly cleaned surfaces, we applied:

  • Gtechniq Smart Fabric for the fabric parts of the upholstery.

  • Gtechniq Leather Guard to preserve the seats.

The Return of the Wheels

The refurbished wheels arrived back from Liverpool, looking brand new. Before fitting them, we applied a dedicated 2 year ceramic coating to make future cleaning a breeze. We also finished the brake calipers in a crimson red, providing a sharp contrast against the white bodywork and now Gloss Black Wheels. Finally, we replaced the 11 year-old number plates with fresh ones from Mersey Plate.

Day 4: Ultimate Protection

Ceramic Coating Application

Before applying protection, we used a panel wipe to remove any lingering oils or residues from the polishing stage. This is a critical step without a surgically clean surface, the coating won't bond.

We then applied CarPro C.Quartz Professional, our accredited ceramic coating. This provides a physical bond to the paintwork that will last up to 3 years, protecting the BMW from the elements and ensuring it stays cleaner for longer.
